According to doctors, the teenager was suffering from 'osteosarcoma' -- the most common type of bone cancer and the sixth most common type of cancer in children.

"She came to us with acute pain and was confined to bed. On diagnosis, a tumour was discovered in the lower part of her thigh," said Ramneek Mahajan, senior orthopaedic surgeon, who performed the surgery

"Mariam was advised chemotherapy to contain the spread of the tumour. She went through six cycles of chemotherapy. Her biopsy results showed that the tumour had regressed. Now the dilemma was what to do," he said.

Mahajan said the challenge was whether to go ahead and amputate the leg or look at other options.

"We discussed it with her family and evaluated the various options apart from amputation. We decided to go for a rare surgery called limb-salvage. The objective was to overrule amputation and make her walk pain-free," he said.

The doctors believe that in two weeks' time, Mariam can stand and walk independently.

"I miss my friends and school. I thank the doctors of India for saving my leg. I will be able to walk pain-free and play with my friends when I reach home," said an elated Mariam.

Scientists Identify New Subtype of Ataxia

The cause of ataxia is a diverse genetic alteration. For this reason it is classified in subtypes. The new subtype identified described by the researchers has been called SCA37. The study has found this subtype in members of the same family living in Barcelona, Huelva and Madrid and Salamanca (Spain). The finding will allow in the medium term that these families and all who suffer the genetic alteration identified will have personalized therapies and diagnostics prior to the development of the disease. The study was funded by La Marat� de TV3 (the Catalan public TV) in 2009, dedicated to rare diseases.

The cerebellum is a part of the brain located behind the brain that, among other functions, coordinates the movements of the human body. When it is atrophied, movement disorders appear, and when the ataxia evolves, the patients suffer frequent falls and swallowing problems. Progressively, they end up needing a wheelchair. Until now, there have been identified more than 30 different subtypes of ataxia, the first of which was described in 1993 by Dr. Antoni Matill, head of the Neurogenetics Unit, IGTP, and Dr. Victor Volpini, head of the Center for Molecular Genetic Diagnosis at IDIBELL.

The publication of this paper has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Hospital de Sant Pau, Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Pitie-Salp�tri�re Hospital in Paris.

Particular eye movements

The first symptoms of ataxia may develop during the childhood or adult stage, depending on the subtype. The SCA37 subtype, the first cases of which were identified by Carme Serrano, neurologist at the Sant Joan de Deu Hospital, Martorell (Barcelona), is expressed at 48 years on average. One of the features of SCA37 subtype is the difficulty for vertical eye movements. Besides the patients identified in Spain by Dr. Serrano and Germans Trias and IDIBELL researchers, there are evidence of the existence of more people affected with this subtype of ataxia in France, Holland and Britain, and for this reason it seems to be a quite prevalent subtype of ataxia in Europe.

All SCA37 patients have a common genetic alteration in the portion 32 of the short arm of chromosome 1, wherein there are a hundred genes. Currently, researchers are sequencing it with new generation technologies to find the specific mutation that causes ataxia. When it is found it will be possible to make an accurate diagnosis in family members who do not yet have developed symptoms. Also, it will be possible to investigate the biological mechanisms that cause ataxia in order to develop and implement personalized therapies, with drugs or stem cells therapy.

The list of 77 names reveals one child was set to be called "Anal" before the Department of Internal Affairs vetoed the proposal, while another narrowly avoided being dubbed "." or full stop.

Other names on the list included "4Real", "V8", and "Queen Victoria".

In some cases, parents appeared to have lost any inspiration for coming up with a moniker for their offspring, wanting to call the latest addition to the family simply "2nd", "3rd" or "5th".

The department's rules forbid any name that might imply a child holds an official title or rank, so "King", "Duke" and "Princess" were among those that had been turned down most since 2001.

"Justice" was the most popular, having been rejected 62 times, although "Justus" and "Juztice" also failed to gain official approval.

In 2008, New Zealand's family court ordered that a nine-year-old girl whose parents had called her "Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii" should have her name changed because it was embarrassing and "makes a fool of the child".

At the time, judge Rob Murfitt criticised parents who gave their children bizarre names, citing examples such as "Number 16 Bus Shelter", "Midnight Chardonnay" and twins called "Benson" and "Hedges".

They have identified blood-based signs of plaque in the brain that could alert doctors to the disease long before symptoms appear and irreversible brain damage has occurred, News.com.au reported.

"Early detection is critical. It gives people a much better chance of receiving treatment before it's too late," researcher Dr Samantha Burnham from CSIRO's Preventative Health Flagship said.

Dr Burnham hopes the breakthrough will lead to routine age-based testing in five to 10 years.

Early diagnosis would also allow people to develop a care plan to reduce the burden on the patient and their family, she said.

She said that a blood test would be the ideal first stage to help identify people at risk before a diagnosis is confirmed with cognitive tests and brain scans.

The research has been published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

Getting pregnant at a young age is known to protect a woman against breast cancer, suggests study.

Researchers in BioMed Central found that Wnt/Notch signalling ratio is decreased in the breast tissue of mice which have given birth, compared to virgin mice of the same age.


In humans having a child before the age of 20 decreases risk of breast cancer by half.

Using microarray analysis researchers from Basel discovered that genes involved in the immune system and differentiation were up-regulated after pregnancy while the activity of genes coding for growth factors was reduced.

The activity of one particular gene Wnt4 was also down-regulated after pregnancy.

The protein from this gene (Wnt4) is a feminising protein - absence of this protein propels a foetus towards developing as a boy.

Wnt and Notch are opposing components of a system which controls cellular fate within an organism and when the team looked at Notch they found that genes regulated by notch were up-regulated, Notch-stimulating proteins up-regulated and Notch-inhibiting proteins down-regulated.

Wnt/Notch signalling ratio was permanently altered in the basal stem/progenitor cells of mammary tissue of mice by pregnancy.

Mohamed Bentires-Alj from the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research, who led this study said, "The down-regulation of Wnt is the opposite of that seen in many cancers, and this tightened control of Wnt/Notch after pregnancy may be preventing the runaway growth present in cancer."

The research is published in the open access journal Breast Cancer Research.

The guidelines appear in the May 1, 2013 American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine."While a large proportion of asthma patients experience exercise-induced respiratory symptoms, EIB also occurs frequently in subjects without asthma," said Jonathan Parsons, MD, associate professor of internal medicine and associate director of The Ohio State University Asthma Center and chair of the committee that drafted the statement. "To provide clinicians with practical guidance for the treatment of EIB, a multidisciplinary panel of stakeholders was convened to review the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of EIB to develop these evidence-based guidelines."

The exact prevalence of EIB among asthma patients is not known, but prevalence estimates among subjects without an asthma diagnosis are as high as 20%. Prevalence estimates among athletes are even higher, ranging between 30% and 70% for Olympic and elite-level athletes.

"Given the high prevalence of EIB, evidence-based guidelines for its management are of critical importance," said Dr. Parsons. "These new guidelines address not only the diagnosis and management of EIB but address other important issues related to EIB, including environmental triggers and special considerations in elite athletes."

Treatment recommendations in the guidelines include use of a short-acting beta-agonist before exercise in all EIB patients. For those patients who continue to have symptoms after beta-agonist treatment, the guidelines recommend use of a daily inhaled corticosteroid, a daily leukotriene receptor antagonist, or a mast cell stabilizing agent before exercise.

For all patients with EIB, the guidelines recommend that warm-up exercises be performed before planned exercise.

Known environmental triggers for EIB include cold air, dry air, ambient ozone, and airborne particulate matter. These and other environmental factors may contribute to the increased prevalence of EIB seen among competitive ice skaters, skiers, swimmers, and distance runners. Many of the treatments used to treat EIB, including beta-agonists, are banned or restricted in competitive athletics, as some are considered performance-enhancing, and treatment must be tailored according to the guidelines of the governing bodies of these sports.

"While EIB is common, there are effective treatments and preventive measures, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological," said Dr. Parsons. "The recommendations in these guidelines synthesize the latest clinical evidence and will help guide the management of EIB in patients with or without asthma and in athletes at all levels of competition."

In a review of 12 earlier studies of breast cancer patients, a team of epidemiologists from Canada found that women with implants had a 26 percent higher risk of being diagnosed at a later stage of the disease.

This was possibly because implants cast shadows on mammograms, blocking the view of breast tissue.

A separate review of five other studies showed that women with implants also had a 38 percent greater risk of death from breast cancer, said the authors -- likely due to the later diagnosis.

There was no data to suggest that the implants themselves were a cause of cancer.

"The research published to date suggests that cosmetic breast augmentation adversely affects the survival of women who are subsequently diagnosed as having breast cancer," wrote the team.

But they stressed the findings should be interpreted "with caution" as some of the studies included in the meta-analysis may have had scientific shortcomings.

The studies analysed were all published after 1993, mainly in the United States, Europe and Canada.

Commenting on the research, plastic surgeon Fazel Fatah, agreed the findings should be treated with caution.

"This paper does raise however the important issue of possible problems with early diagnosis of localised breast cancer in some women who have breast implants due to difficulty with mammography," he told AFP.

Implants did not prevent women from feeling lumps in their own breasts.

"Further studies are required to see if other forms of breast scanning, such as MRI, could be preferable to mammography in women who have breast implants," said Fatah, a former president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Added Britain's Breast Cancer Campaign: "We need further robust research before we can say that breast implants impact on survival or that these women may benefit from different screening techniques."

An estimated one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives, according to the study.

According to the World Health Organisation, there are about 1.38 million new cases and 458,000 deaths from breast cancer each year -- the most common type of cancer among women.

Breast implants have been at the centre of a global health scare since French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) was found in 2010 to be using substandard industrial-grade silicone gel in manufacturing its prostheses.

An estimated 300,000 women in 65 countries are believed to have received PIP implants, which some health authorities say are twice as likely to rupture as other brands -- though officials said there was no proven cancer risk.

The PIP scandal has given rise to several court cases and calls for tougher medical controls.
