Hudson River is Host to Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
Jul 25th 2013, 06:26

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria were found in certain spots of the Hudson River and researchers have said that the disease-causing strains due to sewage contamination in the water, could pose health risks.

Researchers identified microbes and discovered that the microbes are resistant to those types of antibiotics which are most often used to treat pneumonia, ear infections and other common ailments.

During repeated tests, the microbes were found to be resistant to ampicillin and tetracycline.

This is first study of its kind to associate specific microbes to sewage in the Hudson River, and draw a comparison of results at different locations. The study is published in the Journal of Water and Health.
