Despite popular perception that living with same-sex couples could harm the children, a new study conducted by Australian researchers suggests that children with gay parents are happier and healthier compared to children living with heterosexual parents.
Dr Simon Crouch, who led the Australian Study of Child Health in Same-Sex Families at University of Melbourne, said that one of the reasons for the incorrect perception is because of the strongly-held beliefs that people have when it comes to thinking what a family was. Dr Crouch said that when a family did not follow the structure, then people start to think that there is something wrong.
The researchers asked 315 gay, lesbian and bisexual parents of 500 children between 5 and 17 years of age to fill out questionnaire on the physical, mental and social well being of their children. Around 80 percent of the same-sex parents who completed the questionnaire were women.
The researchers found that there was no statistical difference in the physical and mental health of children with same-sex parents compared to the rest of the population. On comparing the general health and family cohesion of the children, the researchers found that those who came from families with same-sex parents scored significantly higher than the national average compared to children from average families.
