94-year-old Starts to Walk Again After Hip Replacement Surgery Sep 16th 2013, 17:37 The hip replacement surgery was performed at the Indraprastha Apollo hospital in the national capital. Chainsukh was bed-ridden for the past two months with a hip fracture. The fracture meant that he could not even turn around in bed, and lying on just one side of the body caused him additional pain and problems, the hospital said in a release Sunday. Given his advanced age, doctors were wary of operating on him. "Any surgical procedure in the elderly, above 90 years old, is challenging and includes much surgical risk. The patient was bed-ridden for a long time and after examining him we decided to do a hip replacement on him. If a patient is bed-ridden for a long time, a large number of complications can occur and increase the risks to his life," Rajeev K. Sharma, senior orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon of the hospital said. Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant. After taking all necessary clearances from the physician and anaesthetist, the patient was operated upon last week in a procedure lasting over two hours by a team of five doctors, including also a heart specialist. Post-surgery, Chainsukh is now walking with the help of a walker and is soon expected to be able to use a walking stick. Source-IANS
