Australian Racing Board Announces Ban on Anabolic Steroids in Horse Racing Sep 18th 2013, 08:54 According to The Independent, the new rule will be introduced on November 1, with the ban taking effect from May 1 next year to give any treated horses six months to be clear of the drugs. The report mentioned that under current rules, steroids are prohibited in horses only on race day. The announcement came in the wake of the Mahmood al-Zarooni scandal, following which the British Horseracing Authority has been vocal in opposing the use of steroids and has raised the issue for worldwide discussion. Mahmood Al Zarooni was an Emirati horse-racing trainer at the Godolphin horse-racing operation, who had confessed to doping 11 prize thoroughbreds belonging to Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed, and has been banned for eight years in a scandal, which is reportedly the biggest in the sport of horse racing, reports said.
