The products tested belonged to well-known companies like Heinz, Cow & Gate and Boots. The tests revealed that baby foods did not even contain the nutrients present in home cooked food. It is certainly not a substitute for home food and researchers said that these baby foods are just processed food put in a jar.

During the tests, researchers found that 50% of the products were classified as sweet. It is advisable to avoid sweet foods during weaning time for sugar can encourage sweet tooth and tooth decay.

"People might think that something sweetened with fruit is healthier, but it's not. Young babies like sweet food because it tastes like breast milk but it is not moving them on. It is processed food that's been put in a jar so it's not that surprising that it does not match up with home-cooked foods."

It is advisable for parents to get advice from a healthcare professional when they plan to begin weaning.
