The survey revealed that 91 percent Americans own a cell phone, which means 57 percent use their handsets as their primary online device, News24 reports.

Pew found that the proportion of cell owners who use their phone to go online has doubled since 2009, the report added.

According to the report, the Internet users on mobile phone, most likely to be young adults, non-whites, and those with relatively low income and education levels, accounts for 21 percent of the population owning mobiles.

The report found 85 percent of mobile phone owners in the 18 to 29 age group use their handset to go online, compared with 73 percent in the 30 to 49 age group and 51 percent in the 50 to 64 age category.

Some 74 percent of African-American mobile phone owners are cell internet users, compared to 68 percent of Hispanics with mobile phones, the report added.

The research also found out that 45 percent of those with an annual income of less than 30,000 dollars were far more likely to use their phone as their primary internet device, compared with 27 percent of those with 75,000 dollars or more.
