Unilever, which produces the Dove Spa Strength Within supplement, funded the study which tested the effectiveness of the pill among 166 women who had an average age of 61 years. The participants were randomly divided into three groups with the first group given a low dose of the supplement, the second a slightly higher dose while the third group was given a placebo.
After a period of 14 weeks, the researchers tested the participants' skin and wrinkles by analyzing small samples of tissue and taking moulds of their crow's feet and found that wrinkles in people from the two groups who had been given real pills shrank by an average of 10 percent while their bodies also produced more collagen. The study has been published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science.
"We used ingredients which have been shown in the scientific literature and our own tests to combat the causes of skin ageing and kickstart old skin cells into behaving like young skin cells. We spent five years testing the ingredients on hundreds of women and found this combination could reduce deep wrinkles within 14 weeks. There is nothing currently on the market which can do that", Professor John Casey, vice-president for biological sciences at Unilever, said.
