Paul van der Velpen, who is the head of Amsterdam's health service, used a public health website to air his views on sugar, stating that as it is easily available for the public, more and more people and becoming overweight and thus increasing healthcare costs after developing health conditions associated with obesity.

He added that while rising obesity rates could be tackled by encouraging people to exercise, changing their diets was a more effective option.
