Noninvasive Magnetic Brain Stimulation may Offer Benefits in Treating Anorexia
Nov 14th 2013, 18:06

A new study conducted by researchers in Canada said that noninvasive magnetic brain stimulation, which is already used in treating depression, can also be used in treating eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.

Researchers at University Health Network in Toronto tested the treatment on a group of 20 patients with entrenched cases of anorexia or bulimia and found that it led to measurable symptom improvement in among half of the patients and the affect persisted for nearly one year.

"The upshot is that between 50 and 60 percent of the time you're getting at least a 50 percent reduction in bingeing behavior. And this is among patients who had already tried everything for their eating disorder, and nothing had worked. So, what we're talking about is completely unprecedented", lead researcher Dr Jonathan Downar said.

The study has been presented at the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting in San Diego on Tuesday.
