Insulin-boosting Hormone Brings Great News for Diabetes Patients
Apr 27th 2013, 17:55

A recently discovered hormone - betatrophin- may just bring about a sea change in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes.

It may soon be possible for diabetics to do away daily injections many times during the day, courtesy this once-a-year drug.

This is possible as scientists have found a hormone which can increase the number of insulin-making cells by 30 times. This can also make a significant difference in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. Scientists are also of the opinion that the betatrophin hormone could have the power to even stop the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

'It could eventually mean that, instead of taking insulin injections three times a day, you might be able to take this hormone once a week or once a month, or in the best case, maybe once a year,' they said.

Researcher Professor Doug Melton said, 'Our idea is relatively simple. We would provide this hormone, the type 2 diabetic will make more of their insulin-producing cells and this will slow down, if not stop, the progression of their diabetes.'
