Emotional Problems High Among Surrogate-born Children
Jun 24th 2013, 05:34

A recent study undertaken by the Centre for Family Research at the University of Cambridge, tracked families that had used egg donation, or donor sperm, natural conception and who used a surrogate to have children - revealed some startling insights regarding how well the children were adjusted.

The study has pointed out that surrogate born children may suffer emotional and behavioral problems as they try to stomach the fact that they were carried by a woman other than their biological mother.

The research also pointed out that there was not much problem among children when they were conceived using a donor egg and sperm. The reports show that children conceived with donor eggs and sperm adjusted as well as the children naturally conceived. In contrast, children who were carried by a woman who was not biologically their mother seemed to struggle with the idea and exhibited behavioral issues.

They were found to suffer emotional issues like anxiety and depression and exhibit antisocial and aggressive tendencies. 'We hope to revisit the children next year when they are 14 years-old, as issues to do with identity become important in adolescence. This is also a time when relationships with parents can become more difficult,' researchers said.
