The drug, Ketamine, showed promise as a quick result treatment in the most difficult to treat cases of depression.
Researchers conducted a study at the Michael E. Debakey VA Medical Center, Baylor College of Medicine to evaluate the efficacy of this drug in a group of 73 patients who were victims of treatment-resistant major depression.
Patients with treatment resistant depression do show any positive response to antidepressant medication. The study revealed that patients who took this drug portrayed greater improvement in symptoms within 24 hours.
The use of this drug for victims of treatment-resistant depression needs to be explored further, since earlier studies have demonstrated improved symptoms in bipolar patients.
