The enormity of the situation is best understood from the dismal statistics - one out of 10 children in Britain is obese even before they begin school. There has been a four fold increase in the number of children and teenagers admitted to hospital for obesity-related diseases in the last ten years.
Professor Mitch Blair, of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said: "Being severely overweight at such a young age has clear physical health implications including a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease and joint problems. In addition, there can be serious psychological repercussions - teenage years are tough enough without the extra burden of being obese."
