Listening to Music is Good for Heart Disease Patients

Researchers led by Prof Delijanin Ilic, from the Institute of Cardiology, University of Nis, Serbia, conducted the study on a group of 74 cardiac patients who were divided into three groups. The first group was made to take part in exercise classes for three weeks, the second was made to listen to music while those from the third group enrolled in exercise classes and listened to their favorite music.

The researchers found that people from the third group improved their crucial measures of heart function significantly while their exercise capacity also increased by 39 percent. Those from the first group displayed a 29 percent improvement in their exercise capacity while those who only listened to music improved their exercise capacity by 19 percent.

"When we listen to music we like then endorphins are released from the brain and this improves our vascular health. There is no 'best music' for everyone - what matters is what the person likes and makes them happy", Professor Ilic said.
