Adequate Sleep During Pregnancy is Very Important
Oct 24th 2013, 20:14

A study that tracked 1144 women aged 16 to 46 through the final trimester of their pregnancies, to evaluate the effect of inadequate sleep found that excessive or even too little sleep during pregnancy can bring on several health issues like diabetes and post-natal depression. It can also increase the risk of a prolonged labor as well as up the chances of a C-section.

Massey University sleep scientists researched the impact of the hours and quality of sleep on pregnant women.

"What we can tell from this is that sleep is likely to be an important factor and therefore it's really important that pregnant women are trying to get as much good quality sleep as they can", Dr Leigh Signal said.

Research found that women who did not sleep well in late pregnancy carried an elevated risk of depression.

Researchers also found that interrupted sleep impacts the birthing process and those who had frequent breathing pauses were likely to go into an emergency caesarean section.
