Quantity of Alcohol You Drink Depends on Design and Shape of the Glass

The study found that the design of a glass and the way it is held can also determine how much alcohol drinkers consume. It also goes on to say how white wine drinkers portray a tendency to pour themselves more of the drink.

A study was conducted by researchers from Iowa State University in the United States and participants were asked to pour a normal drink in different types of glasses and in different settings.

Researchers found that when pouring white wine into a clear glass, participants happened to pour nine percent more than when they were pouring red. Nearly 12% extra wine was poured into a wider glass as compared to the standard ones.

Dr Doug Walker, lead author of the study, said: "If you ask someone how much they drink and they report it in a number of servings, for a self-pour that's just not telling the whole story. One person's two is totally different than another person's two. Participants in the study were asked to pour the same amount at each setting, but they just couldn't tell the difference."

Wider glasses made participants pour 11.9 per cent more of wine. Further, 12.2 per cent more wine was poured when they were holding their glasses as compared to glass on a table. Low color contrast between the glass and drink increased the chances of pouring more of the drink than when the color contrast was high.

Isn't it time that people begin to use a proper serving size for alcohol?
