An Ambi Pur survey seeking to identify what makes a good and bad Aussie housemate found that 88 percent of respondents thought their male roomies were messy, while 71 percent said they were smelly and unhygienic, the Telegraph reported.
Boys' habits were also on the nose, rated more likely to hog the TV remote (14 percent), less likely to clean up after themselves (88 percent) and the main culprits when it came to leaving dirty dishes under the bed (65 percent).
In more bad news for the blokes, they were also criticised for sleazy behaviour, rated more likely to try to sleep with housemates (21 percent), compared to women (13 percent).
Females may have been model housemates on several levels, but when it came time to cough up for bills and rent, they were left lacking, rated more likely than men to pay late (31 percent to 24 percent).
The research also showed that the most important hallmark of a bad housemate was body odour and other unpleasant smells.
Irritating habits include flatmates having their friends and partner over constantly, choosing to stay in their room all the time and being neat freaks.
