AMD Detector Technology from the UK Astronomy Technology Centre
Jul 23rd 2013, 17:58

Engineers at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) have come up with a latest space technology, usually employed to spot faint light from distant stars and galaxies, which is altered to find the initial stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The device is named as a "retinal densitometer," and is designed to gauge the changes in the amount of light reflected by the retina following exposure to a bright light source.

The retinal densitometer is non- invasive and certainly much more sensitive as compared to the detection techniques used presently. It is capable of measuring responses to light from different parts of the retina.

This device has proved worthy in the initial tests, and has been able to detect the light changes on the macula with AMD. Tests also showed that it is possible to measure and draw a comparison with light response in subjects with a healthy macula.
