Seatrac is a mechanical device developed by a group of Greek scientists and makes use of solar energy to move over 30 wheelchairs in and out of water in a day. The device had been developed in 2008 and is covered by European and U.S. patent laws.
Seatrac is already gaining popularity in Europe with the device being exported to Cyprus while talks are on with architects in Croatia, France, the United Arab Emirates and Israel.
While the disabled are delighted to finally move around without seeking help from their family or friends, many are unhappy over the lack of support from state and local authorities. Says Lefteris Theofilou, who has been bound to a wheelchair for nearly half his lifetime, "It makes you feel free and able to do things you could not imagine you could do on your own. These guys have created an incredible thing and we stumble across problems from the state. This is Third-World sloppiness."
